President Bola Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, during the 8th Day Fidau prayer held at Dipo Dina International Stadium on [date], revealing the monarch’s pivotal role in his 2023 electoral victory.
At the gathering which brought together top politicians including Governors Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Tinubu recounted the late traditional ruler’s steadfast support during critical political moments.
“The Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you,” the President stated emotionally.
Tinubu eulogized the 91-year-old monarch as a cultural icon whose integrity shaped Yoruba history: “Oba Adetona brought dignity to the Yoruba people… Yoruba history would be incomplete without acknowledging his contributions.”
He particularly commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his care of the late ruler.
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, described the Awujale as “a moral compass” who transformed Ijebuland through 64 years of visionary leadership. The governor highlighted the monarch’s interfaith diplomacy and advocacy for the underprivileged, urging citizens to preserve his unifying legacy.
Other political elite present at the solemn gathering included three former Ogun governors (Osoba, Daniel, Amosun), federal lawmakers, and traditional rulers – a testament to the Awujale’s cross-generational influence.
