Senator Abba Moro (Benue South) has accused security agents in Benue State of extorting residents while criminals run rampant. He also faulted President Bola Tinubu for disregarding the Senate’s recommendations on tackling insecurity.
Speaking on AIT’s Democracy Today, Moro expressed frustration over the persistent killings in Benue, stating: “There’s no Benue person with a conscience today that would say he or she is not bothered by the resurgence of killings across the state. We are tired of burying our slain citizens. These killings need to stop.”
While welcoming Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent condemnation of the violence, Moro urged stronger action, saying: “He has been silent, and his silence has not been golden. One hopes he goes beyond the condemnation and makes promises. These are not enough.”
State Speakers Demand Swift Action
Meanwhile, the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, led by Oyo State Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, condemned the rising violence nationwide.
In a statement, Ogundoyin lamented the “tragic loss of lives, widespread displacement, and unimaginable trauma” caused by attacks in states like Plateau, Borno, Benue, Niger, and Kwara.
He stressed: “The time for mere condemnation and rhetoric has passed; urgent and coordinated action is now required at all levels of government.”
The conference urged governors to prioritize security beyond infrastructure, advocating for community policing and grassroots strategies. It also called on the federal government to mitigate economic hardships fueling unrest, citing inflation and unemployment as worsening crises.
