The Russian Federation has lauded Nigeria for its support in the United Nations’ adoption of a resolution aimed at combating the glorification of Nazism.

Amb. Andrey Podyelyshev of the Russian Federation Embassy in Nigeria made this remark during a photo exhibition on Wednesday in Abuja, commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The war, which refers to the Soviet struggle against Nazi Germany during World War II, remains the deadliest and most devastating conflict in human history, claiming millions of lives.

The exhibition was dedicated to solemnly remembering the victims of the Second World War, marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, and promoting awareness about the dangers associated with the war and the Great Patriotic War.

Podyelyshev expressed his gratitude to Nigeria, stating, “I would like to thank Nigeria for supporting Russia in the UN’s resolution combating the glorification of Nazism.”

He highlighted that during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Nigeria voted in favour of the resolution to combat practices contributing to contemporary forms of racism, discrimination, xenophobia, and intolerance.

He further emphasised, “We truly appreciate Nigeria’s cooperation, and we look forward to continued collaboration on international matters, especially within the United Nations.”

Podyelyshev also noted Nigeria’s recent partnership with BRICS, expressing confidence in the potential for further cooperation.

On security matters, the ambassador stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue regarding international security concerns in regions around Russia, Nigeria, and the broader world.

He reiterated Russia’s commitment to a multipolar world, highlighting the need for nations to work closely together to address global challenges such as economic crises and insecurity.

“Russia’s approach to promoting a multipolar world, where different countries unite for common interests, remains steadfast.

“The future world order should be built on the interests of various countries within a multipolar framework,” he said.

Podyelyshev also emphasised that Africa, particularly Nigeria, played a significant role in Russia’s foreign policy, seeing the cooperation of African nations as a priority.

The Great Patriotic War, which spanned from 1941 to 1945, ultimately led to the establishment of the United Nations.

The USSR played an instrumental role in shaping the global system designed to prevent future wars.

The aim was to create a framework that would protect the dignity of nations and ensure global peace, laying the foundation for international cooperation in the years to come.
