In a historic gathering of dignitaries, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu joined global figures at the Vatican on Sunday for the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected 267th Bishop of Rome.

The ceremony marked the formal commencement of the Pontiff’s leadership following the demise of Pope Francis on Easter Monday 2025.

The President, who arrived in Rome a day prior, participated in the solemn rites underscoring the transition of spiritual authority within the Catholic Church.

Images of a cordial interaction between Tinubu and the newly inaugurated Pope were later shared by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, via his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Accompanied by the caption, “President Bola Tinubu exchanging pleasantries with Pope Leo XIV at the installation mass for the new Pope in Rome on Sunday. Photo: State House,” the post showcased the Nigerian leader engaging with the Pontiff amid the grandeur of the event.

Pope Leo XIV’s ascension concludes a period of mourning and deliberation within the Church, as he steps into a role last held by Pope Francis, whose nearly 12-year tenure ended with his passing on April 21, 2025.

The installation drew heads of state and religious delegates worldwide, reflecting the enduring diplomatic and cultural significance of the papacy.

The Nigerian delegation emphasized Tinubu’s presence as a gesture of solidarity and interfaith collaboration, underscoring the nation’s role in global dialogues.

Vatican officials described the mass as a “reaffirmation of unity,” blending tradition with the fresh vision of its new leader.
