Nigeria’s Power Sector Demands Sustained $10 Billion Yearly Investments Over Two Decades, Says Minister Adelabu

During the inauguration of a 2.5-megawatt solar hybrid facility at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu outlined a stark financial roadmap for resolving the nation’s electricity crisis. He emphasized that Nigeria must secure $10 billion annually for two consecutive decades to establish a stable and functional power grid.

Adelabu traced the persistent blackouts and erratic supply to chronic underinvestment, aging infrastructure, and a failure to upgrade transmission systems over six decades.

“These challenges have accumulated due to decades of neglect, lack of maintenance, and insufficient expansion efforts,” he stated, stressing that bridging this deficit demands sustained funding and systemic reforms.

A pivotal step, he noted, is the recent legislative overhaul enabling decentralized energy governance. “The first bill signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023 liberated the power sector, allowing federal, state, and local governments to legally participate in electricity provision,” Adelabu explained.

The law grants 11 states—with more expected—autonomy to manage generation, transmission, distribution, and metering, fostering localized solutions.

However, he cautioned that financial injections alone won’t suffice without addressing foundational gaps.

“Spending $10 billion yearly only makes sense if we tackle bottlenecks like outdated policies and infrastructure decay,” he said, underscoring the need for parallel modernization efforts.

The newly commissioned solar plant, though modest, symbolizes incremental progress. Yet, Adelabu’s remarks reinforce the scale of Nigeria’s energy journey: a marathon requiring decades of strategic investment and collaboration across all tiers of government.
