Arewa House, a historic research center and museum in Kaduna, is embroiled in controversy after allegations surfaced that a clinic within its premises, known as the Sir Ahmadu Bello Clinic and the late Premier’s Fives Court, were sold for N40 million by a former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. According to reports, the clinic and Fives Court’s new ownership is planning to demolish the facilities.
Established in 1970, Arewa House is a renowned institution dedicated to documenting and researching the history and culture of Northern Nigeria.
Located in the former residence of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and the first premier of Northern Nigeria, the center boasts an impressive collection of historical materials, including Arabic manuscripts and documents related to the region’s history.
Arewa House is affiliated with ABU Zaria and plays a vital role in promoting academic research, cultural preservation, and community engagement. The institution’s significance extends beyond its historical value, as it continues to shape the region’s identity and foster cooperation among diverse groups.
The alleged sale of the clinic and the Fives Court, the money of which were allegedly pocketed by the former Vice-chancellor and erstwhile Director of the Centre, has sparked concerns about the potential impact on Arewa House’s operations and the preservation of its historical heritage. As a hub for academic research and cultural exchange, the institution’s integrity and autonomy are essential to its continued relevance and effectiveness.
The story is evolving as investigations to confirm the allegations are underway. Stakeholders should await the outcome, hoping that the truth will be revealed and the future of Arewa House will be secured.
