In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the sealing of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja, effective Monday. The action comes just 24 hours before the party’s critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.
The PDP headquarters will be among 4,793 properties revoked by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in March this year. This move marks the latest chapter in Wike’s bitter feud with the PDP leadership that began after his defeat to Atiku Abubakar in the party’s 2023 presidential primaries. The FCT Minister had famously refused to campaign for Atiku following the contentious primary, instead throwing his support behind then-candidate Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who ultimately won the presidency.
Political analysts view the timing of the secretariat’s closure as strategically significant, potentially disrupting the PDP’s final preparations for its first NEC meeting since the 2023 elections. The meeting was expected to address critical party issues, including possible leadership changes and strategy for upcoming elections.
Security sources confirm that FCTA officials have been instructed to enforce the revocation order strictly, barring both staff and visitors from accessing the Wadata Plaza headquarters. The development threatens to deepen divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party as it struggles to regroup after its electoral losses.
Neither Wike nor PDP officials have issued additional statements regarding potential alternative venues for Tuesday’s crucial meeting, leaving party members scrambling to determine how the sudden development might affect their plans.
