Prominent human rights activist and lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, has lambasted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over its recent crackdown on individuals accused of Naira abuse, citing the agency’s focus on this issue as a misguided priority.
Adeyanju’s criticism comes on the heels of the EFCC Chairman’s comments on Tompolo, which seemed to further inflame the issue. In response, Adeyanju is calling on the National Assembly to repeal the Naira Abuse provision in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, arguing that it targets the way of life, culture, and tradition of the Nigerian people.
“The law should serve the people, not the other way around,” Adeyanju emphasized. “We should not be making laws that are aimed at criminalizing our cultural practices and traditions.”
Adeyanju also questioned the EFCC’s priorities, suggesting that the agency should focus on more pressing issues of corruption rather than being distracted by Naira abuse cases. “The EFCC should be chasing real issues of corruption and not be distracted by issues of Naira abuse,” he said.
Adeyanju’s comments have sparked a national conversation about the role of the EFCC and the relevance of the Naira Abuse provision in the CBN Act. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Nigerians are eager to see the EFCC focus on more substantive issues that affect the country’s economic and social well-being.
