The Nigerian government has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s preemptive military strike against Iran, warning that the ongoing exchange of attacks between the two nations threatens regional and global stability.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa declared: “The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran.” The statement expressed deep concern over the sustained missile and aerial exchanges that have rocked both countries since Friday.
“Nigeria expresses its grave concern and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges both parties to exercise utmost restraint in the interest of regional and global peace,” the statement continued.
“The continued cycle of retaliation not only endangers civilian lives but threatens to plunge the broader Middle East into further instability, with implications for international security and economic development.”
The crisis escalated Thursday when Israel launched a massive air offensive targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and military leadership. Israeli officials confirmed hundreds of sorties aimed at strategic sites, while Iran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles toward Israel. The conflict reached Israeli population centers Friday night, with explosions reported over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as air raid sirens sounded across the country.
Nigeria’s foreign ministry emphasized diplomatic solutions, stating: “Military action is not a substitute for negotiation, stressing that the path to lasting peace lies in diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.”
The statement called for urgent UN Security Council intervention, adding: “Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.”
The Nigerian position reflects growing international alarm as the Israel-Iran conflict risks spiraling into wider regional warfare, with potential consequences for global energy markets and security.
