The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, joined millions of Muslims worldwide to commemorate the annual Ashura procession. This solemn event honors the martyrdom of Hussain bin Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), who was killed in 61 AH, over 1300 years ago.
The procession was held peacefully across northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Notably, this year’s event was devoid of attacks by Nigerian security operatives, a departure from previous experiences.

Sheikh Abdulhamid Bello, speaking to FCT News Gazette, emphasized, “We conduct our activities peacefully, unless provoked by security agents. Whenever violence erupts, it’s often because we were attacked unprovoked.”
Bello highlighted the movement’s commitment to peace and lawfulness, stating, “For over 40 years, the Islamic Movement has maintained a clean record, demonstrating our dedication to peaceful and regulated activities. We strive to respect the civil rights of fellow citizens.”
He appealed to the government to cease its onslaught on movement members and treat them equally under the law. Bello also urged authorities to release unjustly detained members from various prisons, emphasizing their right to freedom.
