The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled plans to transition from manual to online processing of political party registrations, as the number of applications from associations seeking recognition climbs to 129.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this development following INEC’s weekly meeting in Abuja. The commission reported receiving seven new applications in the past week alone.
“Since last week, seven more applications have been received, bringing the total number so far to 129. All the requests are being processed,” Olumekun stated.
The electoral body is set to launch a dedicated political party registration portal, integrated as a module within its existing Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS). This digital solution aims to streamline what was previously a manual procedure.
“Unlike the manual method used in previous registration, the commission is introducing a political party registration portal which is a module in our PFRAS. This will make the process faster and more seamless,” Olumekun explained.
“In the next one week, the commission will conclude the final testing of the portal before deployment.”
INEC plans to release detailed guidelines to assist applicants in navigating the new digital platform. “The commission will also issue guidelines to facilitate the filing of applications using the PFRAS,” the National Commissioner added.
The complete list of applicant associations has been made available on INEC’s official website and other communication channels for public access.
