The Presidency has strongly rejected claims by former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso that Northern Nigeria is being marginalized under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a detailed response, officials outlined numerous federal projects currently transforming the region, countering Kwankwaso’s allegations of neglect.

The NNPP leader had voiced his concerns during a constitutional dialogue in Kano, citing worsening poverty, insecurity and infrastructure decay across Northern states. His comments came after experiencing firsthand the region’s transportation challenges during a recent road trip from Abuja to Kano following a flight cancellation.

The Federal Government is executing massive infrastructure projects across Northern Nigeria, according to Presidential Media Adviser Sunday Dare. Major highway developments include the crucial Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway, the trans-regional Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, and the Kano-Maiduguri Dual Carriageway. Rail transportation is equally receiving attention, with ongoing work on the Kaduna-Kano and Kano-Maradi lines, alongside the rehabilitation of Abuja’s metro system. These projects aim to dramatically improve connectivity and economic integration across Northern states.

In the energy sector, the 614-kilometer AKK Gas Pipeline project continues to make progress, complemented by the Gwagwalada Power Plant development and new solar initiatives in Kaduna State. Agricultural investments are equally substantial, featuring a $158.15 million Agricultural Value Chain Development Programme currently benefiting nine Northern states.

The Kolmani Integrated Development Project spanning Bauchi and Gombe states represents another major initiative, while the ACReSAL program plans to restore one million hectares of degraded land across the region.

The administration is also prioritizing human capital development through healthcare improvements. Major teaching hospitals including Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria and University of Jos Teaching Hospital are undergoing significant upgrades, alongside the Federal Medical Centre in Nguru. At the community level, over 1,000 primary health centers are being revitalized to enhance healthcare access.

Education Minister of State Dr. Tunji Alausa emphasized the administration’s balanced approach, stating: “The President is not playing politics with development. His footprint is visible across all zones, especially in areas historically underserved.”

Despite these extensive projects, some Northern residents remain skeptical about their immediate impact. Katsina community leader Aminu Bello expressed reservations, noting: “These projects sound impressive, but many of us are yet to feel the impact. People are still hungry and insecure.”
