Federal Government Imposes 7-Year Freeze on New Tertiary Institutions

In a sweeping move to address systemic challenges in higher education, the Federal Government has announced a seven-year ban on establishing new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The decisive action follows growing concerns about underutilized facilities, strained resources, and declining academic standards across the nation’s tertiary education landscape.

The moratorium was ratified during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu presided over deliberations. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa presented the critical assessment that precipitated this policy shift, highlighting how unchecked institutional proliferation has compromised educational quality.
