In response to severe flooding in Kaduna State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has rescued two elderly individuals trapped in collapsed buildings and begun distributing essential relief supplies to displaced residents.

The rescue operation—conducted jointly with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), the Red Cross, and Federal and State Fire Services—saved an elderly man on Bashama Road, Tudun Wada, and an elderly woman on Kigo Road, Kaduna North LGA. The woman has since been reunited with her family in Kabala Costain.

Heavy rainfall that began last Thursday triggered the flooding, which has devastated communities along River Kaduna and its tributaries—including Kigo Road, Bashama Road, Kinkinau, Malali, Ramat Road, and Rafin Guza. Hundreds have been displaced, with many homes and properties destroyed.

A temporary camp has been established at the Arc. Namadi Sambo Skills Acquisition Centre near Tudun Wada Children’s Hospital, where most of the displaced—including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and persons with disabilities—are now taking shelter.

NEMA has provided emergency items such as mattresses, blankets, and mosquito nets to support those affected.

The Head of NEMA’s Kaduna Operation Office, Malam Suleiman Mohammed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to “coordinating resources with relevant agencies to mitigate the impact of the disaster and ensure the delivery of humanitarian support to affected persons.”

Further updates are expected as the emergency response continues.
