Russia has urged the United States to respect international law after President Donald Trump threatened potential military action in Nigeria, a claim that a both Nigeria and ECOWAS has already dismissed as unfounded.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow is “monitoring the situation” and advocates for “strict compliance with the norms of international law.”
This statement comes in response to Trump’s recent remarks to journalists, where he did not rule out using military force in Nigeria. Trump justified this by alleging a “genocide against Christians” and criticizing the Nigerian government’s “inaction.”
Prior to these threats, Trump had labeled Nigeria a “country of particular concern” and promised an investigation into the killings.
Supporting these possibilities, media reports indicated that the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has drafted plans that include deploying American fighter aircraft to Nigeria.
However, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected Trump’s core allegation, stating that claims of a Christian genocide are baseless and risk escalating regional tensions.
