The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position effective immediately.
The resignation was confirmed in a press release issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on December 1, 2025.
According to the release, Abubakar tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, stating health grounds as the reason for his departure.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed his gratitude for Abubakar’s service to the nation. The President is expected to inform the Senate of a successor later this week.
Abubakar, 63, served as the two-term Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His resignation occurs against the backdrop of a recently declared national security emergency by President Tinubu, who has indicated that further details on the scope of the emergency will be forthcoming.
