No to State Police! By Yusuf Lawal Nasidi

The real issue is not whether our police system is federal or state-controlled. The deeper problems are injustice, impunity, indiscipline, greed, inequality, corruption, tribalism, selfishness, and many other forms of sentiment that affect governance at every level.

Creating state police forces will not solve these challenges; it may only multiply them. The conduct of many governors especially in how local government elections are handled suggests that state police could become extensions of political power, used to intimidate opponents or silence dissent.

If the Federal Police can already be influenced, the situation may become even more concerning when full control rests in the hands of state executives.

What the country needs is sincerity, integrity and a genuine commitment to reforms that are free from bias. Only then can we begin to address the insecurity affecting the nation.
