PDP Governors Rally to Salvage Party Amid Defection Crisis, As Wike Joins Emergency Talks

In a high-stakes bid to stem a wave of defections threatening to cripple the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its governors held an emergency meeting in Abuja, with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike making a surprise appearance.

The closed-door gathering, held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, brought together current and former governors, as well as top party leaders, to address the PDP’s escalating internal crises. The defection of key figures—including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa—to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified fears of a mass exodus.

Acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum led discussions alongside prominent figures such as Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and former governors including Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

The meeting focused on strategies to unify the party ahead of critical events—the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27 and a possible August convention. However, concerns persist that unresolved disputes could derail these plans, further destabilizing the PDP.

At its April 14 meeting, the PDP Governors Forum had already ruled out forming a coalition against the APC in 2027, instead declaring that the party would “welcome any party, association, or group willing to join it, with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027.”

With time running out, the PDP’s leadership is under mounting pressure to act decisively—or risk collapse.
