The Federal Government has filed criminal charges against suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) over her claims of an alleged assassination plot.
The case, filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT/HC/CR/297/2025), accuses the senator of making defamatory statements during a live April 3, 2025 appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
During the broadcast, Akpoti-Uduaghan had accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of conspiring to kill her.
The charge sheet lists the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the complainant, with the senator as the sole defendant. Count one alleges she “made imputation knowing or having reason to believe that such imputation will harm the reputation of a person,” violating Section 391 of the Penal Code Law, punishable under Section 392.
This legal action follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s earlier suspension by the Senate for six months after she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment—a move the upper chamber termed a disciplinary measure for her “misconduct” in handling the allegations.
