The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a robust rebuttal to recent criticisms from opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, who accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of “weaponizing poverty.”
In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the ruling party characterized these allegations as baseless and self-serving, framing them as the lamentations of political elites displaced by transformative economic reforms.
The APC mounted a vigorous defense of Tinubu’s policies, detailing tangible economic improvements including the elimination of fuel subsidy corruption and chronic petrol queues, the successful harmonization of exchange rates to boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness, and the increased capacity of states to pay a N70,000 minimum wage – more than double the previous N30,000 benchmark.
The party highlighted Nigeria’s 4.6% GDP growth in the fourth quarter of 2024 as the highest in a decade, alongside the transformative impact of the Dangote Refinery and manufacturing resurgence in the South East as evidence of the reforms’ success.
“President Tinubu has genuinely prioritised the best interest of Nigerians over any political electoral calculation,” the APC asserted, acknowledging temporary hardships while insisting the reforms are essential for transitioning Nigeria from a consumption-based to production-driven economy.
The statement concluded with a firm commitment to maintaining the reform course, dismissing opposition figures as “hardened political opportunists” clinging to a defunct economic model that served their interests. This exchange signals intensifying political tensions as Nigeria’s economic transformation becomes a central battleground ahead of the 2027 elections.
