In a bold move to reshape Nigeria’s farming landscape, President Bola Tinubu launched a fleet of 2,000 state-of-the-art tractors on Monday, declaring a new era of mechanized agriculture designed to attract the nation’s youth.
“We have over 2,000 advanced tractors, 50 bulldozers, 12 mobile workshops, and more than 9,000 farming tools ready,” Tinubu announced at the Abuja launch of the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme.
“This will make farming easier, create jobs, and make it ‘sexier’ for our youths.”
The comprehensive initiative includes international partnerships with countries like Belarus to provide Nigerian youth with specialized training in modern farming techniques, equipment maintenance, and agricultural machinery production. Tinubu emphasized this would create both immediate employment and long-term self-sufficiency.
“These tools represent more than equipment – they’re instruments of national transformation,” the President stated, while warning beneficiaries that proper usage would be monitored. “Your actions will be tracked and evaluated.”
Tinubu hailed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for its role in stabilizing the sector, calling the launch a watershed moment for Nigerian agriculture. “Today marks the rebirth of farming in our nation,” he declared, framing the mechanization drive as Nigeria’s path to becoming a global agricultural leader.
The program’s youth-focused approach aims to counter longstanding perceptions of farming as outdated labor, instead positioning agriculture as a tech-driven, profitable career path for Nigeria’s burgeoning young population. With food security remaining a pressing national concern, the administration hopes this injection of modern equipment and training will significantly boost productivity across the agricultural value chain.
