President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday evening convened an emergency meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in what appears to be a last-minute strategy session ahead of Thursday’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The closed-door deliberations, which commenced at 7 pm in the Presidential Banquet Hall, followed hours of preliminary discussions among the governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, led his colleagues into the villa for the high-stakes engagement.
Sources reveal the meeting aimed to harmonize positions on critical party matters before the NEC gathering, resolve the contentious issue of the National Chairmanship position, and address concerns from North Central leaders about marginalization in party leadership.
The North Central zone has persistently demanded a return of the National Chairman position, which was relocated when former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje assumed the role.
Among governors spotted at the meeting were Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and Governor Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti).
The gathering represents a crucial effort to present a united front as the ruling party prepares for significant decisions at Thursday’s NEC meeting, which could reshape the party’s leadership structure ahead of future elections.
