President Bola Tinubu has publicly dismissed rumors of a rift with Vice-President Kashim Shettima, insisting he “did not make a mistake” in selecting him as his running mate.
The statement, personally signed by the President on Tuesday, issued to mark Shettima’s 59th birthday, comes amid speculation that Tinubu may not run with Shettima on a joint ticket for a second term. This speculation was fueled by a recent endorsement from some APC stakeholders in the North East that mentioned only the President.
In a strong vote of confidence, Tinubu hailed Shettima’s “courage, sense of duty, tenacity, determination, and belief in Nigeria’s greatness.” He extolled the Vice-President’s leadership, noting his excellent service as Governor of Borno State and as a Senator.
“I deeply appreciate your vibrancy, loyalty, partnership, and support as my deputy. In choosing you then as a partner, I selected competence and other qualities that Nigeria could depend on,” Tinubu stated.
The President emphasized that Shettima has justified that choice “every day,” by strengthening their work and bringing fresh perspectives.
“Your dedication reassures me that I did not make a mistake in choosing you as my deputy,” the statement read.
Tinubu affirmed that their partnership, which “transcends official duties,” is integral to delivering the results of the Renewed Hope Agenda for all Nigerians.
