In a significant move to strengthen ties, Nigeria and Colombia have signed a new agreement to deepen political and economic cooperation. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations was signed by top diplomats from both nations at a forum in Abuja’s Presidential Villa.
The deal, inked by Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Colombia’s Deputy Minister Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir, paves the way for more frequent high-level dialogue and eases visa processes for diplomats.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking at the event, challenged both countries to move beyond dialogue and convert their “abundant resources for tangible economic gains.” He emphasized that the private sector must be the primary engine for growth.
Shettima stated that, “We must compare our differences and similarities, as well as our resources and potential. This is how we propel trade, investment, agriculture, culture, and knowledge exchange.”
He outlined key areas for collaboration, including agriculture, energy, and manufacturing, noting shared strengths in products like cocoa, coffee, and renewable energy.
The Vice President also highlighted Nigeria’s push to transform its agricultural sector into a modern agribusiness powerhouse, where Colombian partnership would be vital.
