The Recent Ceasefire: A Welcome Development that Demands Vigilant Skepticism, By Professor Abdullahi Danladi

The announcement of a ceasefire in the ongoing Israeli aggression against the oppressed people of Palestine comes as a momentary sigh of relief to a world long wearied by the sights of destruction, bloodshed, and unimaginable suffering. For months, the Zionist regime has unleashed its war machinery upon Gaza: flattening homes, hospitals, and schools, while the international community watched in horror, often reduced to issuing hollow statements of “concern.”

Indeed, any cessation of hostilities that allows the innocent, especially women and children to breathe, heal, and bury their dead in dignity must be welcomed. It brings temporary respite to a population that has endured unspeakable pain under siege and occupation. Yet, as history has repeatedly shown, such ceasefires from Israel must be approached not with celebration alone, but with sober skepticism and cautious vigilance.

Israel’s record in honouring ceasefire agreements is stained with betrayal and manipulation. Time and again, it has used ceasefires not as genuine steps toward peace, but as tactical pauses, to rearm, to regroup, and to prepare for yet another round of devastation. Each time, the ink of agreement is barely dry before the bombs resume, and the promises of restraint evaporate into the smoke of renewed aggression. This pattern has become almost a signature of Israeli conduct: words of peace accompanied by acts of war.

The world must, therefore, resist the temptation to mistake this ceasefire for a genuine change of heart. It is not a sign that justice has prevailed, it merely pauses the violence. The root cause of the conflict which is the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, the blockade of Gaza, the denial of the right of return, and the systematic oppression of a whole people remains unresolved. Without addressing these fundamental injustices, every ceasefire will only be a lull before the next storm.

True peace cannot emerge from a structure built on lies and oppression. It must be anchored in justice, accountability, and the unconditional recognition of Palestinian rights. Until Israel abandons its colonial ambitions and the international community stops rewarding its impunity, every truce will remain fragile, every pause uncertain, and every “peace talk” little more than a repetition of history’s deceit.

The ceasefire, therefore, is welcome, but it is not victory. It is relief, but not justice. The struggle of the Palestinian people continues until freedom replaces occupation, until dignity triumphs over tyranny, and until the world learns that peace without justice is but a beautifully worded illusion.
