Abuja, Nigeria – In a bid to draw attention to the plight of healthcare workers and the deteriorating state of the nation’s healthcare system, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite strike effective immediately.
According to a statement signed by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, the decision to embark on the strike was not taken lightly, but was necessitated by the failure of the Federal Government to honour its promises and implement agreements reached with the association.
The strike is part of a larger industrial action aimed at compelling the government to address key issues affecting the healthcare sector, including excessive workload, unfair remuneration, payment of arrears, improvement of working conditions, and provision of essential medical infrastructure.
In a passionate appeal, NARD called on all Nigerians to stand in solidarity with the resident doctors, stressing that the struggle is not just about the doctors, but about the future of the nation’s healthcare system.
“We fight not for personal gain, but for the creation of a system that allows doctors to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients in an environment that supports their mental and physical well-being,” Dr. Suleiman said.
The association urged Nigerians to add their voices to the call on the Federal Government to do the right thing and address the demands of the resident doctors.
