Russia, Nigeria Celebrate 65 Years of Diplomatic Ties

Russia and Nigeria marked a significant milestone yesterday, celebrating the 65th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two nations. To commemorate this occasion, Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Yusuf Maitama Tuggar exchanged congratulatory messages, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

In his message, Minister Lavrov expressed satisfaction with the high level of cooperation between Russia and Nigeria, built on mutual respect, trust, and shared positions on regional and international issues. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an active and substantive political dialogue, as well as practical collaboration in trade, economy, and humanitarian spheres.

Minister Tuggar, on behalf of the Nigerian government and people, reciprocated the sentiments, highlighting the country’s commitment to deepening partnership with Russia. He noted that Nigeria values the relationship characterized by mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and shared aspirations for global peace, stability, and development.

The two ministers highlighted the progress made in various sectors, including defense, education, energy, science, technology, space cooperation, trade, and cultural exchange. They expressed optimism about further collaboration in economy, security, and people-to-people exchanges.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Nigeria on November 25, 1960, marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership. Over the decades, both countries have worked together to advance the prosperity of their peoples and contribute to a more just and equitable international order.

Minister Lavrov wished his Nigerian counterpart good health and success, while Minister Tuggar assured his Russian counterpart of Nigeria’s highest consideration. The exchange of messages underscores the strong foundation of Russia-Nigeria relations and the mutual desire to further strengthen bilateral ties.

As both countries celebrate this milestone, they are poised to take their partnership to new heights, leveraging their diverse strengths to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.

The anniversary celebration serves as a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between Russia and Nigeria, with both nations looking forward to a brighter future together.
