The Federal Government has called on Nigerian travelers to strictly adhere to immigration laws of their destination countries amid recent visa policy adjustments affecting Nigerian passport holders.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Nigerian authorities are actively engaging with U.S. and UAE counterparts following modifications to visa issuance terms. The U.S. specifically cited “the current rate of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the need for reliable access to their records” as key reasons for its policy review, describing the changes as part of a routine global reciprocity process.
President Bola Tinubu has mandated full compliance with international protocols, directing agencies to strengthen intergovernmental cooperation on identity verification for consular services.
“The President calls on all Nigerians to respect the immigration regulations of their host countries and to uphold the integrity of the permits and privileges granted to them under the laws of those jurisdictions,” the statement emphasized.
Regarding UAE transit visas, the government noted operational processing continues despite lacking formal notification of policy revisions.
“The President appreciates the continued cooperation of the Government of the United Arab Emirates… Any genuine concerns raised are being addressed through the appropriate channels,” the statement added.
The administration reaffirmed its 4-D Foreign Policy commitment to protecting diaspora interests while maintaining robust ties with both nations.
“The President assures all Nigerians that his administration will continue to pursue the best possible outcomes for citizens abroad,” the statement concluded, underscoring Nigeria’s dedication to bilateral relations with the U.S. and UAE.
