President Bola Tinubu has extended congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for securing a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship. The team triumphed over Mali 78-64 in Sunday’s final in Abidjan.
In a statement by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team’s resilience after overcoming an initial deficit: “Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”
The President particularly commended Coach Rena Wakama’s leadership and the team’s historic achievement: “By winning the AfroBasket trophy for a record fifth consecutive time, you have written your names in history.”
Tinubu announced plans to host the champions in Abuja, stating: “I look forward to receiving the victorious team and the trophy.”
He also pledged continued government support as D’Tigress prepares for World Cup qualifiers next March.
The victory marks Nigeria’s seventh overall AfroBasket title, reinforcing the nation’s dominance in African women’s basketball.
