Nigeria’s most-capped player, Ahmed Musa, has hung up his international boots for a new role in football management. The Super Eagles icon, whose career spanned three World Cups and an African crown announced his retirement in a statement released on Wednesday.
With 111 appearances, a record that stands as a testament to his longevity and commitment, Musa leaves a legacy etched in historic moments. “I was just a young boy when the journey started,” he reflected. “Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about.”
His career is bookmarked by iconic achievements including membership of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, and the only Nigerian to have scored in two separate World Cups including a dazzling brace against Argentina in 2014, followed by another against Iceland in 2018. “Scoring at the World Cup… are memories I will always carry with me,” Musa said.
Having recently rejoined Kano Pillars, Musa has now been appointed the club’s General Manager, formally beginning his post-playing career in administration ahead of the new NPFL season.
In a heartfelt farewell, he expressed profound gratitude, saying: “As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude… Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
