Ex-Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido has positioned ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) most viable presidential contender for 2027, urging the party to actively court his return.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the PDP stalwart asserted: “To me, he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him.” Lamido emphasized Jonathan’s unique credentials – a former commander-in-chief with proven governance experience and collaborative leadership style.
The ex-governor presented a stark comparison of potential southern candidates: “With all respect to all members, I don’t see a better alternative than Jonathan…Who is there in PDP now that can challenge Jonathan in terms of being in office, being full-headed, being somebody who is willing to listen?”
Lamido’s endorsement comes amid intensifying behind-the-scenes maneuvers to draft Jonathan back into active PDP politics. Though the former president maintains public silence about 2027 ambitions, political observers note increased closed-door negotiations between his camp and party power brokers.
Jonathan’s potential return has sparked both excitement and skepticism within PDP ranks. Supporters cite his statesman image and national appeal, while critics question whether the party should revisit past leadership rather than groom new standard-bearers.
As speculation mounts, Jonathan’s next moves remain the subject of intense scrutiny, with Lamido’s remarks potentially accelerating pressure for a formal declaration. The former president’s decision could reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the next general elections.
