President Bola Tinubu has declared that no Nigerian should lose their life due to power outages in medical facilities, as his administration commits to a major overhaul of the health sector’s energy infrastructure.
The President, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the declaration at the National Stakeholders Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector held in Abuja. He emphasized that persistent electricity failures in hospitals “compromise safety, interrupt care, and cost lives.”
“In surgical theatres, maternity wards, intensive care units, laboratories, and emergency rooms across the country, power outages too often compromise safety, interrupt care, and cost lives. These outages cannot continue, and under our administration, they should not. Lives are at stake. We must act now,” Tinubu stated.
The President outlined that the government is pursuing innovative energy solutions—including off-grid solar and hybrid systems—to power hospitals, clinics, and research institutions. He described these reforms as integral to the Renewed Hope Agenda and the broader effort to combat energy poverty.
“This initiative to advance energy solutions in our hospitals is not an isolated intervention. It is part of our broader plan to address energy poverty in Nigeria by decentralising and deploying tailor-made solutions, while promoting private sector participation,” he said.
Tinubu assured investors of an enabling environment and credible partnerships in renewable energy, linking reliable power to improved healthcare outcomes. He emphasized that restoring confidence in public healthcare requires “reliable energy, improved patient outcomes, and quality services accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of social or economic status.”
