The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Professor Chris Piwuna, has paid tribute to late Professor Abu Malam, a one-time ASUU Chairman of the University of Abuja branch, who was laid to rest this afternoon in his country home, Gwantu.
The former University Don and ASUU Activist died on Tuesday, 17th March, 2026, after a brief illness in a medical facility in Abuja.
The ASUU President described the deceased as a courageous, bold, and honest fighter for the oppressed, who used the ASUU platform to fight for good governance and improvements in the education sector.
Professor Piwuna prayed to the Good Lord for the repose of the soul of the late ASUU Leader and also prayed to God to console the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the deceased, and help them bear the irreparable loss.

In his tribute, the Chief of Gwantu, Malam Balarabe Abdullahi Karma, told the congregation, particularly the delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from different universities in the country, who were led by the Union’s President, that the late Professor had been an honourable gentleman from his primary school days up to when he became an accomplished and successful university scholar and icon of scholarship.
The Chief prayed to Allah to accept his soul and grant him peace, emphasizing that the late Professor was a man of peace and a symbol of development who sacrificed his life for the service of his community.
Regarding the insinuations by some people in his community that the Professor’s death was not a natural one, but was caused by forces of darkness, the Chief, corroborated by different pastors who spoke during the church service to bid farewell to Professor Abu Malam, emphasized that the Don’s demise signified the end of his life as ordained by his creator.
The Pastors concurred that life and death belong to God, and whoever is born must die someday. They prayed to the Good Lord to accept the deceased and admit him into His garden of eternal bliss and to bless his family.
Earlier, the President of Sanga Development Association, Jibrin Ibrahim, called on the family of the bereaved and people of Sanga to be blessed with the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
