The Federal Government has announced plans to construct a N1.5 trillion light rail line in Kano metropolis, according to Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, Rep. Bichi emphasized the project’s transformative potential for the city’s transportation system: “The Kano metropolis light rail project, worth $1 billion (N1.5 trillion), is preparing to be procured. Those who have traveled to Europe and Asia have seen such projects and know their importance. It will immensely add value to the state’s economy when completed.”

The lawmaker strongly defended President Tinubu’s commitment to northern development, detailing several major infrastructure projects underway or completed in the region. These include the near-completion of the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, the revamped 400km Kaduna-Abuja highway (scheduled for completion by first quarter 2026), the finished 200km Kano-Hadejia road, and the N250 billion Kano northern bypass project.

“It’s funny for some to say President Tinubu isn’t interested in this region. As Appropriation Chairman, I know what he’s done for the north. We must put sentiments aside – he’s initiated many laudable projects here,” Bichi asserted.
