The Nigerian government is pushing back against what it calls a coordinated foreign propaganda campaign, using its upcoming hosting of a major global communications forum as its primary platform for counter-narrative.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris launched the offensive Monday while announcing Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, directly addressing what he termed “existential reputational threats” to the nation’s image.
“We must come to terms with existential reputational threats to our national brand, in which external purveyors of untruth are mischaracterising our nation as a destination for a so-called persecution of people based on their religious faiths,” Idris told attendees.
The minister delivered a strong denial of religious persecution claims, stating: “For the umpteenth time, I am emphatic that there’s no iota of truth in the claim of a Christian Genocide in Nigeria.”
The 2026 forum, themed “Responsible Communication: The Voice of the World,” will position Nigeria at the center of global discussions about ethical communication. Idris positioned this as a strategic opportunity for Nigeria to reshape international perceptions under President Tinubu’s leadership.
The government is mobilizing multiple sectors to support the event. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo promised specialized VVIP services at international airports to ensure delegates’ first impression of Nigeria is positive, while traditional rulers led by Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar pledged institutional support for the communication initiative.
NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku described the forum as a chance to showcase Nigeria’s transformation, praising recent improvements in service delivery at airports and other public institutions as evidence of the country’s readiness for the global stage.
