Labour leaders Andrew Emelieze and Itoro Obong have written a petition against President Bola Tinubu to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) over alleged workers’ exploitation.

As leaders of the Federal Workers’ Forum (FWF), they claim the Nigerian government has been unfair and hostile to workers through anti-worker policies, including fuel price hikes, naira devaluation, and inflation.

The two labour leaders announced plans for an indefinite protest starting April 22, 2025, citing the government’s failure to ensure decent work conditions and fair pay.

They also accused the government of flouting ILO and UN conventions aimed at promoting workers’ rights.

Emelieze and Obong expressed concerns that the situation in Nigeria poses an existential threat to citizens and global peace and security, potentially contributing to the rise in deadly migrant journeys across the Mediterranean Sea, calling for queries and sanctions on the Nigerian government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)/Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the treatment of workers.
