Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has honored the late Justice Mohammed Uwais as a monumental figure in Nigeria’s judicial landscape, celebrating his enduring legacy in shaping the nation’s legal framework.
In a moving tribute, the CJN characterized the former Chief Justice as an erudite jurist, visionary reformer, and statesman whose contributions to constitutional law, judicial independence, and democratic governance will forever remain etched in national annals.
Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted Uwais’ distinguished career trajectory – his Supreme Court appointment in 1979 and subsequent tenure as CJN (1995-2006) – noting how he “distinguished himself by his unwavering commitment to justice, courage in defending the rule of law, and the clarity and scholarship of his judgments.”
The tribute particularly emphasized his post-retirement nation-building efforts, including chairing the landmark Electoral Reform Committee, as evidence of his “deep love for the country and passion for institutional integrity.”
“The life and legacy of Hon. Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais will continue to inspire generations of judges, lawyers, and public servants,” the CJN affirmed, memorializing him as “a beacon of principle and a guardian of judicial honor.”
Extending condolences to the Uwais family, judiciary, and nation, Justice Kekere-Ekun concluded: “I pray for the peaceful repose of his noble soul,” cementing the tribute as both a professional homage and personal farewell to one of Nigeria’s most transformative legal minds.
