Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar issued a clarion call for decisive action as West African ministers concluded critical deliberations in Abuja on Friday.
The 94th ECOWAS Council of Ministers’ session, focused on regional security, food crises, and integration policies, ended with a strong mandate for implementation.
“The conclusions reached during this meeting will no doubt contribute to the actualisation of the regional integration agenda,” declared Tuggar in his capacity as Council Chairman. “It remains essential that we encourage our respective governments to faithfully implement the decisions we have adopted.”
The closed-door negotiations yielded undisclosed resolutions addressing what Tuggar termed “pressing challenges… bearing direct impact on citizens’ well-being.”
His remarks highlighted growing regional consensus, citing academic recognition of ECOWAS as “uncelebrated heroes” of African trade integration.
The session marked a transitional moment for the bloc. With President Tinubu’s two-year ECOWAS chairmanship concluding, Tuggar acknowledged his likely departure as Council chair after overseeing what he described as “a clear and promising course towards a more unified region.”
“This may be my last Council Session as Chair,” Tuggar reflected, praising colleagues’ “unalloyed support” during tenure marked by security crises and institutional reforms. “I hope the same cooperation will extend to my successor.”
