Shi’ites Conclude Arbaeen Trek Without Attack by Security Agents

In a significant and peaceful conclusion to this year’s Arbaeen symbolic trek, members of the Islamic Movement led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, successfully commemorated the religious procession across multiple states—including Abuja—without any reported attack by security forces. This marks a notable departure from previous years, where violent attacks by joint security forces often marred the event.

The annual Arbaeen trek honors the memory of the suffering endured by the family of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) following the martyrdom of his grandson, Imam Hussain (pbuh), in the year 61 AH. The historical event saw the Prophet’s household forcibly marched in chains through the scorching desert from Karbala, Iraq, to Damascus, Syria.

In a statement issued by Sheikh Sidi Munir Sokoto on behalf of the movement, he emphasized the enduring significance of the commemoration, stating: “We walk to remember their sacrifices and to draw lessons of resilience in the face of oppression. Today, as the world witnesses the horrific genocide in Gaza, their struggle against injustice resonates more than ever.”

This year’s peaceful observance stands in stark contrast to past processions, which were frequently met with deadly force by Nigerian security forces. Sheikh Munir recalled the tragic events of 2018 under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, when more than 40 Islamic Movement members were killed during the Arbaeen trek.

“For years, our peaceful processions were met with violence, but today, we thank Allah for thwarting their evil plan and allowing us to complete this year’s march without bloodshed,” Munir stated.

The Arbaeen trek, which draws millions of Shi’a Muslims worldwide to Karbala, Iraq, has seen increasing participation in Nigeria despite past crackdowns.

The statement also connected the commemoration to contemporary struggles, particularly the ongoing genocide in Gaza, describing the Arbaeen march as both a religious obligation and a symbolic stand against global oppression.
