While climate change is a global crisis, its effects are not felt equally. In Nigeria, one of the most overlooked and vulnerable groups are the Almajiri children. Millions of young boys and girls excluded from formal education, economic opportunities, and public decision making. Often living in poverty, they face daily struggles that climate change only worsens.
The Almajiri system, once a respected tradition of Qur’anic learning in northern Nigeria, has been weakened by poverty, urbanization, and the erosion of community support. Today, over 10 million Almajiri children live on the margins, many forced to beg for food, with little access to education, healthcare, or safe living conditions. This makes them especially vulnerable to flooding, extreme heat, and poor sanitation.

Recognizing their exclusion from climate conversations, Ambassador Fatima Adam, a youth leader, activist, and global advocate launched The Almajiri Climate Action Story as part of the QS Impact Global Day of Action 2025 under the theme “Educating the Next Generation on Climate Action.”
“Climate justice must include everyone especially those whose voices have been silenced for too long,” said Ambassador Fatima Adam.
“When we educate the Almajiri children today, we are planting seeds of hope, leadership, and a sustainable tomorrow.”

What the Project Delivered
The initiative combined education, environmental action, and humanitarian support to inspire and equip Almajiri children as future climate advocates:
• Climate Education Sessions — Simplified lessons on climate change, its effects, and practical steps to protect the environment.
• Food Sharing — Nutritious meals provided to 100 Almajiri children, addressing both immediate hunger and fostering trust.

This holistic approach empowered participants with both knowledge and dignity showing that they are not just passive victims of environmental change, but potential protectors of the planet.
Local Challenges Addressed
The program tackled pressing environmental issues affecting Almajiri communities:
• Poor waste management and sanitation.
• High exposure to extreme weather and flooding.
• Lack of environmental literacy and access to sustainable practices.
Future Plans
To sustain momentum, Ambassador Fatima Adam plans to:
• Establish eco clubs in Almajiri learning centers.
• Train local facilitators for ongoing climate education.
• Partner with grassroots organizations for better waste management.
• Expand outreach to other marginalized communities across Northern Nigeria.
