Mewar International University Celebrates Nigeria’s Culinary Heritage During Cultural Week Event

Mewar International University transformed into a vibrant showcase of Nigeria’s rich culinary traditions on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, as students presented an array of traditional meals from across the country’s diverse ethnic groups. The Cultural Food Presentation, a key feature of the university’s ongoing Cultural Week, highlighted the deep-rooted food cultures that define Nigeria’s multi-ethnic society.

The event drew participation from students across all departments and academic levels. Guided by the principle of unity in diversity, the presentation allowed students to serve and explain signature dishes from their regions. The Kanuri community offered Danderu, Biski, Yakuwa, Aleyyahu, Tamarind, Marɗo and Mansha Soup (Farfesu), while Yoruba students presented Amala, Ewedu, Gbegiri, Moimoi, Ofada rice with sauce and Palm Wine.

From the Fulani group came Nyiiri with Ɓokko, Haako Kase and Ɓe Kwasam ɓe Dekere, and Hausa students shared Masa with Miyan Taushe, Shinkafa da Wake (Garau-Garau) and Ɗanwake. The South-South region, representing Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers states, displayed Banga soup with starch, pounded yam, Bole with fish and pepper sauce.

Igala students from Kogi State featured Oje oskapa, obo egwa, oskapa okpeye, oro dudu, okpa and akamu, and the Shuwa group presented Kabsar rice and kunun madara. The Bagyi tribe contributed Miyar Akaki, Tuwon Ruwa, Tuwon Masara, and Pami.

The event took a memorable turn when student Blessing Dickson was recognized for her exceptional loyalty and knowledge of the Mewar International University Anthem. The Pro-Chancellor, Engr. Abubakar Sani Bello, personally commended her and presented her with a reward of ₦100,000, which was supplemented by an additional ₦20,000 from another senior official, bringing her total prize to ₦120,000.

In his address, the Pro-Chancellor expressed deep pride in the students’ efforts saying, “I am thrilled to see such dedication to our cultural heritage and university spirit.”

Demonstrating his support, he pledged to taste a dish from every tribe represented and announced a generous incentive for each participating group: ₦20,000 per cooler used to present their food. This system notably benefited the Yoruba and Hausa tribes, each of whom received the highest amount for presenting six coolers.

The event was attended by members of the university management, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students from all faculties, creating an atmosphere of shared joy and cultural exchange.

The Cultural Food Presentation forms part of a broader series of activities scheduled throughout Mewar International University’s Cultural Week, aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue and appreciation within the academic community.
