Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue to face low approval ratings until his policies begin to deliver tangible benefits for Nigerians.
Sani made these remarks during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he acknowledged that Tinubu has set a precedent by tolerating criticism even from his own political base in the South-West.
Reflecting on his time in the Senate, Sani highlighted the contrast between Tinubu’s administration and previous governments, where dissent was often suppressed. He recalled, “When I spoke out in the Senate about insecurity in the North, I faced strong opposition from fellow Northern senators.”
“There was an expectation to remain silent and accept the situation simply because the president at the time was from our region. If you raised concerns about killings, poverty, or out-of-school children under Buhari, you were accused of tarnishing the president’s image.”
He noted that Tinubu is pursuing reforms despite knowing they would make him unpopular in the short term.
“A leader has two choices: either please the people by doing what they want immediately or make difficult decisions for the country’s long-term future, even at the cost of losing popularity.”
“Tinubu has chosen the latter. He will remain unpopular until the outcomes of his reforms become evident,” Sani explained.
