In a historic display of international cooperation, the Japanese government has donated 183 books to the University of Maiduguri as part of the “Read Japan Project”.
The ceremony which held on August 2, 2025, was attended by Ambassador Suzuki Hideo and top university officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele.

The donated books are expected to enrich the university’s library and provide students with valuable resources to enhance their learning experience.
Ambassador Suzuki praised the partnership between Japan and the University of Maiduguri, highlighting the vibrant “NARUTO” Japanese Culture Club as a shining example of cultural exchange between the two nations.

This generous donation is part of the “Read Japan Project”, an initiative aimed at promoting educational development and cultural understanding between Japan and Nigeria. The project is facilitated by the Tokyo Foundation and the Nippon Foundation, and the University of Maiduguri is proud to be a beneficiary.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for the donation, emphasizing the importance of collaborations in advancing education and research. He also announced plans to establish a Japanese Corner in the university’s Ramat Library, which will serve as a hub for Japanese studies and cultural appreciation.

The “NARUTO” Japanese Culture Club has been instrumental in promoting Japanese culture in Nigeria, and its activities have been recognized as a symbol of the strong bond between Japan and Nigeria. The club’s efforts have contributed significantly to fostering greater understanding and appreciation between the two nations.
