The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) will begin a five-day nationwide warning strike starting Friday, September 12, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., in response to unmet salary and welfare demands.
The industrial action, which will continue until Tuesday, September 16, follows an online National Executive Council meeting held Wednesday into early Thursday. According to a statement released Thursday, NARD’s NEC members “unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike” and have directed all centers to notify their hospital managements.
The strike coincides with ongoing industrial actions by doctors in Abuja and Oyo State, and comes after the union issued a 10-day ultimatum to government agencies over longstanding grievances.
Key demands include immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, arrears from the 25–35 percent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, and prompt disbursement of specialist allowances.
The doctors are also calling for the restoration of recognition for West African postgraduate membership certificates and the issuance of certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to qualified candidates.
Resident doctors, who form a critical part of the medical workforce in teaching and specialist hospitals, warn that the strike will disrupt services in operating rooms, emergency departments, intensive care units, wards, specialized clinics, diagnostic imaging, and laboratories across district hospitals and primary healthcare centers.
