President Bola Tinubu returned to the Nigerian capital early Wednesday after a state visit to Brazil aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Africa’s most populous nation and Latin America’s largest economy.
The President’s aircraft landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 1:20 a.m. after departing Brasília on Tuesday afternoon. His departure from the International Airport Air Force Base was attended by high-ranking Brazilian diplomats, including Secretary for Africa and the Middle East Amb. Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria Amb. Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete.
The visit, which began with a red-carpet welcome and full military honors at Brazil’s Palácio do Planalto, resulted in the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding covering critical sectors including aviation, agriculture, science and technology, and foreign affairs.
The agreements are expected to directly support the administration’s priorities of enhancing food security, stimulating industrial growth, and positioning Nigeria as an attractive investment destination. The visit also paved the way for Air Peace to begin direct Lagos-São Paulo flights and set the stage for Petrobras’s return to Nigeria.
The trip represents one of the Tinubu administration’s most significant diplomatic efforts to date, potentially marking a new chapter in Nigeria-Brazil relations and creating new opportunities for economic cooperation.
